Carla’s passion for working with children was sparked while completing her university degree in Occupational Therapy. As part of her studies, Carla worked within a leading tertiary children’s hospital, and also had to opportunity to complete an international placement in China. Carla spent 6 weeks in Shanghai at a Children's Rehabilitation Centre. Here her skills in innovation, resourcefulness and communication were harnessed, and her desire to help those with disabilities was truly ignited.
Upon graduation in 2008, Carla began providing therapy on the early intervention team with Disability Services Commission. She worked to assess and provide intervention for children 0-6 years of age, including children with intellectual disabilities and with Autism Spectrum Disorders. In 2012, Carla moved to providing services for children 6-18 years of age with long term disability (Cerebral Palsy, stroke, Down syndrome, Autism). Carla developed strong skills to assist children with a wide range of abilities, including children with non-verbal skills, sensory focused programs, as well as high functioning organizational and social skills development goals.
Carla has taken extensive post graduate training in pediatric occupational therapy including the following highlights: Social Thinking and Social Skills; Sensory Assessment; Visual Perception; Autism and Challenging Behaviour; Infant/Children Feeding; Handwriting; Augmentative and Alternative Communication; Sleep; Play and Literacy in Early Years.
Carla provides therapy with a family centered approach. She is highly collaborative with all people involved in a child’s life, such as teachers, pediatricians, physiotherapists, psychologists and speech pathologists. She is a firm believer in ‘learning everywhere’ and creating opportunities throughout the day to practice a skill functionally. Carla is an energetic, enthusiastic person who likes to keep things fun and creative for kids.
Carla is excited to be welcomed into the Leap! Team, and is very much looking forward to making Vancouver her home. She is keen to explore the outdoors and indulge in as many cultural experiences, such as live music and performances, that she can find.
Carla is a member of the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC), the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT).
